Tattoos.

Hello everyone !

Today I'm going to talk about tattoos because I love them and as a tattooed girl I think I have enough "experience" to be able to give some advice.

First of all, for as long as I can remember, tattoos have always been a tough debate in our society. Everyone likes to have an opinion about them and whomever you're talking to, whatever their age, the conversation is always very similar (which personally, I get bored of very easily). "Why do people like/get them ?" "Those hipsters get tattoos in order to be different but they've all got tattoos which makes them not-so-different..." "Are tattoos just a trend ?" No, they've actually been around for a long time and before they were a "mainstream trend" in Williamsburg and Shoreditch, they were rites of passage or identification marks, in different places and different moments in History. Tattooed people always get asked the same things : "What if you no longer like this design in a few years ?" "What about your job ?" "Have you thought about what you're going to look like when you're old ?"

Over the  years I have formulated my own personal standard answers for each and every one of these particularly inspired questions.

  •  What if I don't like my tattoos in a few years ? Well, first of all I like to think I have put enough thought into the actual design before getting it inked onto my body. Now, maybe indeed I will not love this design just as much in a few years but I don't really understand what it is with people and the idea of engagement when it comes to tattoos. It is totally okay to marry someone (whom you're supposed to spend the rest of your life with) and have a baby (which by the way, you're also going to have for the rest of your life) but totally irresponsible to get a rose on my arm because what if I no longer like it in 5 years ?? Time to reconsider your priorities.

  •  As a creative person, I don't really want to work for someone who cannot possibly appreciate my professional skills because I have ink on my skin. But let's consider you don't really get to choose who you work for (because you need to eat and sleep in a bed and all that), I think if every person stopped asking tattooed human beings in a tolerant but worried voice "what about your job?" and if everyone considered it normal to choose to have tattoos or not, then maybe in a few years no one would even think about whether or not it's gonna kill your job opportunities.

  • Because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm young and stupid and that I don't think about eventually growing "old". It just means I think I'm gonna look super duper cool and take my grandkids to Glasto. YES.

Seriously though, I personally think tattoos are fantastic and I love love love them. Obviously not all of them, they're like kids and dogs, you only love yours and a certain number of others'.

I know that some people like to have "random" tattoos just because they like the design but personally, I like to get tattooed when I feel it's a specific time of my life and I always choose my designs in accordance with what I want them to remind me of.

The first ink I got was in London, the 1st of December, three years ago. I was really happy and after years of talking about getting a tattoo I finally went for it. I had heard about this studio in Shoreditch called Good Times Tattoo so me and Noelle went there to book an appointment. I love this place, it's really pretty, warm and relaxing and as far as I can remember, everyone is very friendly. I think I need to point out the fact they are quite pricey, though, and if you want to book an appointment it seems like you have to be ready to wait a few weeks. (I have emailed them a few times since then and could never get an appointment for when I wanted). I paid £120 for the little feather on my wrist, which took about 10 minutes work. But it was a very good first ink experience and I have actually recommended this studio to a lot of people.

At the time I genuinely thought this would be my one and only ink because "one is enough, then it just gets too much" haha good old me.

But I was able to wait two years to get my second tattoo. December 2014. Just after the last Hobbit premiere (if you don't know me you will soon realize I am a massive lover of Middle Earth) I decided it was finally the right time to have a Tolkien ink. I was in my hometown in France (Rodez) and I got it just after my family and I came back from our Christmas holidays

The tattoo artist is called Gus and he is very very talented. I had heard about of him from people I used to go to high school with and I was not disappointed. The studio is very standard compared to the beautiful places I go to when I am in London, but the tattoo artist is not any less qualified. A lot of my friends and family have noticed the quality of the shading on my second tattoo. I paid 200€ for it and it was about two hours work. I was so pleased with this tattoo artist that I came back this summer to get my Pink Floyd "High Hopes" tattoo. If you live in Southern France and are looking for an amazing place to get tattooed, I definitely recommend Gus Tattoo (he doesn't have a website but you can find him on Facebook or ask me for the details if you're interested).

This summer, when my friend Marine and I thought about getting tattooed in London in September, I immediately thought of Good Times Tattoo. But since it has become a lot more popular over the past few years there ; was absolutely no way to book an appointment, I started looking for a good studio within the Shoreditch area.

Here comes Vagabond in Hackney. Best studio I have ever been to so far. Everyone is friendly, the place is warm and looks fantastic and the prices are very reasonable. Harry Harvey was our tattoo artist and he's just incredibly talented. I LOVE the design of my rose as it is very old school and the shading is incredible. I paid £120 for a piece that represents around 2 hours work.

And last but not least, Vagabond should be given an award for best playlist in a tattoo studio ever ever ever (* enter Simon & Garfunkel, Eagles and Neil Young*).

Oh and for those of you kind enough to simply ask if "it hurts", I can't really tell. I guess it depends on your level of sensitivity. Personally I've never had a bad tattoo experience. It's not a pleasant feeling, sometimes I start getting uncomfortable after an hour but it's very bearable. If you are a little bit scared you can always ask a friend to come with you, it makes me experience a lot more fun and relaxed !

So yeah, I absolutely love tattoos. I think they are a beautiful way of making your body the little piece of art you want it to be. If I were to give you one single piece of advice I think it would be to choose your studio carefully. Do not choose cheap over safe. Pro + safe may cost a little bit more but it's 200% worth it. And also (okay, second piece of advice) take your time to think about your design, there's no rush, your tattoo will be onto your skin just in time.
Thank you very much for reading :) xxx

  1. I love your article :') I don't know if I'll get a tattoo one day, but as we say "never say never" ! In fact, I guess I'm still too scared to suffer. I can't handle pain so easily. And I still need to think about the design AND the location! As you said, it is very important. But I find your tattoos really nice and well-done! Would you like more tattoos in the future ? :)

    1. You'll get one when you're ready or maybe you won't; it's completely up to you :) If you find your "perfect" design I'm sure you won't let anxiety stop you from getting it (and as I said you can always bring a friend along !). But you are so right not to push yourself into it. I'll definitely get more tattoos but I have no idea when because I'm currently on a tattoo break ;) Thank you so much for reading, hun xx
